Sherrie Nickol sent us her series Face to Face, accompanied by this text.
I began the ongoing Face to Face series many years ago with the primary intention of exploring the quiet beauty and dignity of women of all ages. Early in my career, I started photographing college friends in their off-campus apartments, then expanded the settings to an abandoned school nearby. By spending more time with my subjects, the portraits ended up evolving from momentary encounters into deeper explorations of my sitters and the meaning behind the images.
As the series progressed over time, I began to build a visual vocabulary of what it meant to be a young woman. I did not intend to visually change or define the character of my subject but set out instead to allow them to be who they were. These images appear in my recent publication SHERRIE NICKOL (Hirmer Verlag).
