Schilt Publishing & Gallery : Danielle L. Goldstein : Transience

Preview

Published by Schilt Publishing & Gallery, Transience by Danielle L. Goldstein is a new photobook that contemplates impermanence through the shifting landscapes of place and identity. Shot over the course of fourteen years in hotel rooms around the world, the book contains 62 self-portraits that chronicle the artist’s midlife journey through separation, divorce, emotional upheaval, and eventual rebirth.

The project began in an ancient hotel in Spain, where Goldstein started thinking about the many souls that had previously inhabited the old room — it felt haunted. She turned the camera on herself to document both the physical and metaphorical space, using her own body as a placeholder. What began as a ghostly self-portrait of an “everywoman” gradually evolved into a comprehensive photographic diary, one that spans hundreds of hotel rooms and captures the shifting emotional terrain of a transient life.
