Scene 55 gallery in Mougins is showing Requiem pour pianos (Requiem for Pianos) by Romain Thiery until June 2026.
Romain Thiery is a photographer and amateur pianist. Passionate about photography and music, he has managed to combine these two arts in his series Requiem pour pianos, which explores abandoned pianos around the world.
For years, the artist has travelled the globe in search of these forgotten instruments, capturing their melancholic beauty and their silent histories through his lens. For him, the piano is deeply rooted in the depths of our culture and never ceases to retain its nobility. Since 2014, he has discovered more than a hundred abandoned pianos across the world—scenes in which he never changes anything, leaving the place exactly as it is.
His unique approach consists not only in photographing these pianos in their state of decay, but also in recording, note by note, all the sounds they can still produce, in situ. This immersive process preserves the musical soul of each piano, adding a sonic dimension to his visual works.
The series Requiem pour pianos has become the core of his artistic practice, symbolising both decline and resilience. His photographs, imbued with deep sensitivity, tell stories of times past and of nostalgia, transforming the pianos into silent witnesses of their era.
