São Paulo Photo Academy 2014

Preview

The fifth edition of the Mostra São Paulo de Fotografia coincides with the opening of the São Paulo Photo Academy. It is being presented by the Shopping Cidade Jardim and curated by the Doc Galeria. This first edition of the Academy brings together twelve internationally renowned photographers exhibiting work devoted to São Paulo. The goal is to contribute to and encourage the collection of photographs of the city.

The project will remain on view through February 23 at the Doc Galeria. The selected works are unique and fall within four different categories: documentary, journalistic, contemporary and historical. “The photography that we want to feature with this project has a function that goes beyond communication,” says Mônica Maia of the Doc Galeria. “It’s about representing the social, cultural and architectural movements of the city. These are works of art.”

The twelve artists selected this year are Claudia Jaguaribe, Cia de Foto, German Lorca, Klaus Mitteldorf, Lalo de Almeida, Lucas Lenci, Mauricio Lima, Nelson Kon, Paulo Vainer, Roberto Wagner, Sheila Oliveira and Tuca Reines. It will be their mission to choose their successors.
The academy was created to support photography in São Paulo, its dissemination and preservation,” says Fernando Costa Netto of the Doc Galeria. “Soon these works will be part of important collections of Brazilian photography.”
