The title for Sandro Miller‘s Exhibition, Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters, demonstrates his objective in paying homage to great photographers. Miller respectfully pays reverence to some of the major artists from the history of Photography who personally shaped his vision.
These iconic photographs, over time, have become theatrical in their own way – they have come to represent important figures and times in our culture. Today, these images are immediately identifiable. Now we have John Malkovich, a theater actor and Sandro Miller, a photographer collaborating and reenacting these magic and historical moments. Malkovich and Millers recreation and reinterpretation allows the audience to revisit these images and see them in a new way. Viewing these reinterpreted works reminds one of the significance of the originals and the power of photography. Perhaps, we all become actors in front of the camera, whether we are conscious of it or not.
We have developed such a reverence for our idols who have made significant artistic statements. It is refreshing and invigorating when one reconstructs, or recreates these recognizable images and ideas. These iconic photographs contain so much meaningful, historical, and cultural information that a new interpretation is stimulating and inspiring. There is always room for new interpretations and now we have Malkovich, an actor, in collaboration with Sandro Miller, a photographer, meticulously recreating a reality we revere.
