Samuel Guigues

Preview

Born in 1984, Samuel Guigues currently lives and works in Paris after having spent his childhood in Marseille and his first photographic apprenticeships in Paris and New York. His references to Art History, his conceptual angles and his use of digital alterations to illustrate his contemporary subjects makes him an example of today’s young generation of photographers. For this commissioned work about the gastronomy of Flandres, Samuel Guigues paid homage to the great Flemish Masters including Rembrandt, Rubens or Vermeer by paying particular attention to the lighting and postures in his work. “I often ask myself how Rembrandt would have worked if he had been living in our time period with the same techniques at his disposal… He who contributed so much to today’s photographic compositions. Would he have been a photographer?” Contemporary photography is for him a natural extension of realistic painting. An inspiration he claims is part of his work process, without excluding him from today’s way of life that can be especially felt in his choice of style and models. Each series by Samuel, each of his projects is an opportunity for him to put into practice this shared passion for these scenic compositions and this pictorial standard.
