Robert Frank’s Touring Exhibition in UC Berkeley

Preview

As part of the inaugural Reva and David Logan Book Symposium at the University of California, Berkeley, an exhibit of legendary photographer Robert Frank’s work is on view at the Berkeley campus for concurrent exhibitions in the Reva and David Logan Gallery in North Gate Hall and the Worth Ryder Art Gallery, at 116 Kroeber Hall.

The show features dozens of pictures, mounted on three-meter-long paper banners that will be installed directly onto the hallway walls without frames. The exhibit is curated by Gerhard Steidl, founder of Steidl Verlag, one of the world’s most distinguished publishing companies.

Robert Frank (b. 1924, Zurich) is one of the pre-eminent figures of 20th Century photography. With his innovative approach to technique and subject matter and his personal viewpoint, Frank revolutionized documentary photography and redefined the aesthetics of both the still and moving image. The exhibition spans Frank’s entire artistic career, from 1947 to the present, and is visiting up to 50 universities, art schools, museums and other non-profit spaces worldwide.

Because of the show’s size, the Berkeley exhibition is divided between two campus spaces. In North Gate Hall, home of the Graduate School of Journalism (at the southeast corner of Euclid Street and Hearst Avenue), The Americans is exhibited, while the Worth Ryder Gallery, located a five-minute walk from North Gate, shows Frank’s later work.

An unconventional exhibition catalogue, produced in cooperation with the distinguished German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, is for sale for $5.00 throughout the exhibit. Proceeds will benefit the Jim Marshall Fellowship Fund at the School of Journalism.

“Robert Frank’s work started a revolution that has continued to define photography,” says Ken Light, the Reva and David Logan professor of photojournalism. “The photographs from his seminal book The Americans, which took a critical look at our nation’s life in the 1950s, are timeless. His work continues to inspire new generations to follow his path to see what is invisible in America.”
