Rinko Kawauchi

For the festival Planche(s) Contact, Rinko Kawauchi gives us her vision of little things around us we don’t have time to see.

I like details, the little things around us. In fact, the day to day fascinates me. I try to grasp the richness of the world in my photography”, replies Rinko Kawauchi when asked to define her work. She finds this richness in the daily routine of moments and objects: a piece of watermelon, a coffee spoon, a drop of water on a leaf. The photographer reveals the beauty of meaningless things.
Her work radiates serenity, a poetic style, illustrating ordinary moments of life that she usually catches with a 6×6. In July, she spent several days in Deauville, strolling through the town, impressed by the many horses, fascinated by the sky and the sea, and their rivaling hues of colors.

Born in Japan in 1972, Rinko Kawauchi graduated from Seian School of Art and Design. After a short career in advertising, she made a forceful impression when she stepped into the world of photography in 2002, simultaneously releasing three books that revealed her to a large audience. She has exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles (2004) and at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain Paris (2005).
Represented by the galleries Priska Pasquer in Germany, Meessen De Clercq in Belgium, and Christophe Guye Galerie in Switzerland.
