Rencontres Lyon Photo : Ahmed Bouyerdene

Grandparents (1991-1993)
Inspired by the lack of pictures of my grandmother, who disappeared during the Algerian War, this series of portraits is first and foremost a photographic testimony to a generation of Algerians born in the first quarter of the last century. These men and women have a unique relationship to photography. Their culture, while not iconoclastic, is foreign to the dogmatic tradition of the image, and for them having their picture taken it is an event, and the source of sometimes painful memories.

Maqam, portraits of places (2002-2003)
Passing through the highlands from the coast to the Sahara, the maqâms constitute the architectural and spiritual identity of Algeria. These mausoleums found throughout the urban and rural landscape preserve the memory of men and women whom popular tradition has marked with the seal of holiness.
