La Tabacalera joins the official section of PHotoEspaña with an exhibition of selected works from the portfolio reviews, Trasatlántica. A show featuring the work of fourteen emerging photographers from Latin America whose work revolves around the concept of representation.
This exhibition gathers the work of emerging photographers selected from the portfolio reviews, Transatlántica, which took place in Costa Rica and Mexico. The display does not intend to show a homogeneous group representing Latin American photography, but rather to offer one of the many possible perspectives. The pieces focus on situations or interme- diate states between the past and things to come, between what can be seen and what is implied, between what is evident and what is intuitive, all through the careful elaboration of the actual image.
Fabián Hernández restores the identity of a group of men through their clothes and their poses. Luis Arturo Aguirre presents women who, when naked, reveal in full the otherness of their gender. Humberto Ríos, Mariela Sancarí and Xtabay Zhanik compose fables about the concept of death. Roberto Tondopó explores autobiographical experiences through the childhood and puberty of his nephews; and Irama Gómez builds a third-person narrative about old age. Ilana Lichtenstein and Juan Carlos López create projects caught halfway between reality and fiction, between what is evident and what remains implied. Aglae Cortés engages with representations of the void in order to build landscapes that are neither fully abstract nor figurative; and Eduardo Jiménez depicts refectories in Mexican factories as spaces of power and control. The collective Galería Experiência shows images sprung from texts; and Nicolás janowki portrays the Amazon as a transforming landscape. Finally, Leslie Searles has spent time with people who await their fate in a transitional space, the third frontier.
