This past Saturday, 1800 “No Kings” demonstrations happened in the United States. Peter Turnley was in New York; he sent us his photographs and this text.
On Saturday, June 14, millions of people gathered across the United States to protest the Trump administration. In New York City many thousands protested in what was called the “No Kings” protest which coincided with Trump’s military parade in Washington D.C. on his birthday. These protests also follow Trump’s immigration crackdown and his sending the military to Los Angeles.
This day, and these photographs may turn out to be an important inflection point of a wave of opposition towards an American president and regime that has implemented some of the most repressive policies regarding immigration, the rule of law, and freedom of speech, in most people’s lifetimes. Peter Turnley, a documentary photographer based in Paris who has photographed many of the most important geo-political stories worldwide of the past 4 decades, was there to memorialize this important day.
