A “Coup de coeur” : these images by Ida Lansky sent by the PNB Gallery.

There has been much buzz in the art market about the phenomenal, much deserved, interest in collecting women artists. Along with this, there is more interest in curatorial research and acquisition of work by lesser known female artists than ever before. This vital research can deepen our understanding of art history by filling in gaps regarding influences, teachers, mentors, and innovators of their era.

In the late 1990’s, PDNB was lucky to discover one of these under recognized women artists.

The Viewing Room provided will unveil abstract work by Ida Lansky from the 1950’s. Keep in mind that there were a very small number of women creating abstract photography in the 20th Century. Lansky’s teacher was the notable Carlotta Corpron, known for her light abstractions.

Lansky’s photographs were exhibited not only within her school setting, but also in San Francisco, California, Bloomington, Indiana and Dallas, Texas. She then gave up her pursuit of art after a divorce. A short career. But she did keep some prints, including exhibition prints as well as work that she submitted to Carlotta Corpron for studio review. Negatives and workbooks were also saved during her lifetime.
