Paul Géniaux: –Brittany in 1900

Preview

Starting February 18, the gallery Lumière des Roses will present an exhibition entitled La Bretagne de Paul Géniaux.

Paul Géniaux, a photographer from Rennes who was born in 1873 and died sometime after 1930, is known for his pictures of artisans and merchants. Beginning in 1893, he collaborated with his brother Charles, editor of Bretagne-Revue. In 1898, Charles and Paul came to Paris, signing their work “Géniaux frères” (Géniaux Bros.). With a strong interest in men working, Paul took several beautiful series of photographs of the daily life in Paris at the turn of the century. Like Puyo and Demachy, Géniaux photographed street vendors, but his aesthetic was far from pictorialist. His work stands out for its realistic style, its humanity and its poetry.
