Preview

The Galerie Polka is presenting Carnets de voyage, an exhibition by Patrick Swirc combining photographs and diaries. A renowned French portrait artist, Swirc (b. 1961) exhibited the harrowing Lettre à Claire at the 2008 Rencontres d’Arles, followed two years later by La mère des morts.

In 1991, Patrick Swirc began using photography to capture the haunting image of a woman he was madly in love with. “I wanted to hold onto her so badly that I photographed her every day. When she left, I found myself alone. But at least I had this object.

Since then, Swirc has traveled the world, from Morocco to Vietnam, putting together travel books of photographs, calligraphy, drawings and collages. Each work is the record of an encounter, of a place. In his notebooks, Swirc write down the memory of his snapshots.
