Paris Photo : The Diary of Carine Dolek

Preview

The Viennese gallery Westlicht presents at Paris Photo “Kinbaku Shamaki”, the largest installation by Nobuyoshi Araki.
Made of 53 pictures of 56×46 size, taken from his archives and gathered as an 8,2mx1, 7m frise, acrylic painted, “Kinbaku Shamaki” is unique by the size, and unique in it’s relationship of photography and painting.

The name of the work, “Kinbaku Shamaki”, refers to the attachment of Araki to the Japanese tradition: “Kinbaku” means “Bondage” and “Shamaki” : “photography” and the “painted scrolls” of Japanese tradition.
The work has been produced for a museum in Paris. In 2007, Peter Coeln, collector and old friend of Araki’s, went to Tokyo and heard about the work. He then went to the Rat Hole, the Tokyo gallery representing the artist, to have a look at the archives. He could not buy it, because of the Parisian museum had priority. Three months later, without any news of the museum, Araki’s agent called Peter Coeln and offered him the work, which he bought immediately.
“Kinbaku Shamaki”, is exhibited for the first time, at Paris Photo, until Sunday evening.
