Paris : From Florida to Cuba by

Preview

This autumn, the Petit Espace brings us a new exhibition – “From Florida to Cuba”, the third series from Marion Dubier Clark’s travels in the United States. After “From New York to New Orleans” and “From San Francisco to Los Angeles”, the photographer journeyed along the south-east coast of the USA right down to the island of Cuba in the Caribbean. A book with the same title has been published by Editions Filigranes to coincide with the exhibition.

Marion Dubier-Clark’s photography is a state of mind. A state of mind that perfectly illustrates Alain’s philosophy. It is positive, accessible, and depicts life as synonymous with happiness. Just like strawberries taste of strawberries, life tastes happy*. The ability to be happy is fulfilled through activity, through full enjoyment of all your capacities in order to attain self-fulfilment. Gardening, cooking, writing, painting, playing football – it doesn’t matter what activity you choose as long as you are in harmony with yourself.* Gardening, cooking, writing, painting, playing football… and taking photographs.
Marion Dubier-Clark manages the feat of being totally happy in her self-fulfilment and thus of serving as the medium of her photography, in the same way that her photography is the medium of her love for life. Just like happiness is already there, waiting for us to see it, it feels like Marion Dubier-Clark’s images were already there, waiting for her to come along and capture them. Because that was the case. The world is full of this beauty but we are blind to it. While we can only capture images while on holiday, relaxed, open, bathed in warm waves, love and sunshine, they come rushing to this photographer, composing her daily environment as she composes them through her lens. There is joy in their making, with the self wholly reflected in the world in a very Platonic harmony making the images so serenely appealing.
This exhibition takes you on a journey through the beauty of the real world, a journey across an America that Gilles Mora rightly described as a vernacular stage offered to the observer and that therefore already belongs to us, one over which we have already cast an eye. It is also an invitation to share – if only for an instant – the feeling of joy at being here in the world.
