The Maison Européenne de la Photographie de Paris is paying a tribute to the career of Christine Spengler. The exhibition presents two aspects of her work, the first stems from her career as a war correspondent and the second is more personal, with some more recent coloured artistic works.
So it’s in two differently titled parts, “The Years of War” and “The years of Light”, that you will discover Christine Spengler’s universe from 1970 to 2016 spread out before you. The two rooms devoted to the photos of war are separated from the colour rooms by an private chapel, dotted with flowers and candles, displaying the first colour photomontages mad as a tribute to her Alsatian family, and particularly to her brother Eric, who disappeared tragically at the age of 23 years.
Self-taught, Christine Spengler has produced her work for more than 40 years with courage and passion, and presents us with the keys to a world where the noble always prevails over the horror, life over death, taken with her favourite Nikon. It appears elsewhere in the first room of the exhibition, among shards of glass, in a showcase lined with black velvet with a burqa brought back from Afghanistan, surrounded by lilies and roses as a sign of mourning.
For this event, Cherche Midi has published the book L’opéra Du Monde.
