Paris : Andreas Mahl, Mini-Mahl Maxi-Mahl

Preview

Galerie PHOTO12 in Paris is currently showing some of the Polaroid images by German photographer Andreas Mahl. The exhibition runs until 18 May 2016 and includes a selection of 40 works of different sizes, taken with the SX70 and large-format Polaroid cameras between 1980 and 1990. They focus on some of his most characteristic themes – still life, twins, dolls and nudes.

Andreas Mahl is well-known for his experimental work which took the conventional Polaroid techniques into unchartered territory. Most frequently shooting with the SX70, the artist manipulates his images in a variety of ways, such as delaying the development of the emulsion, tampering with the Polaroid’s sensitive layers, superimposition and image-transfer. He thus alters reality, going far beyond the simple act of capturing an image.

His work combines perfect command of the chemical and scientific processes with a very pronounced poetic sensitivity.

The large-format Polaroid takes 20×24-inch (50×60 cm) images. There are only three versions of the legendary camera in existence and just one of them can be found in Europe. Andreas Mahl is one of the rare photographers lucky enough to have tried it out.
