Ashley Gilbertson is a photographer with the VII Photo agency, and a principal at Shell Shock Pictures. Gilbertson’s photographs from Iraq where he worked from 2002 until 2008, gained him recognition from the Overseas Press Club who awarded Gilbertson the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal. His first book, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, was released in 2007. Since then, Gilbertson has been examining veterans’ issues including Post Traumatic Stress and suicide for Time Magazine, The Virginia Quarterly Review, and The New York Times. His collection of photographs depicting the intact bedrooms of service members who died in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bedrooms of the Fallen, was a solo exhibit and was also published by The New York Times Magazine. It went on to win a National Magazine Award and will be published in book form in 2012. Gilbertson’s clients include Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, The Guardian Magazine (UK), Le Monde (Fr.) and his work is in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Victoria, The National Library of Australia, The Museum of Contemporary Photography (IL), The Nelson-Atkins Museum (KA), and The Houston Museum of Fine Art.
Ashley Gilbertson is an award-winning member of VII Photo. Gilbertson’s imagery from Iraq, where he worked from 2002 until 2008, earned him critical acclaim from the Overseas Press Club which awarded Gilbertson the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal for his 2004 work in Falluja.
His first book, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, was released in 2007 and went on to become a best seller, reaching the Top 100 on Amazon and selling in excess of 10,000 copies. Since then, Gilbertson has been producing Bedrooms Of The Fallen, a collection of photographs depicting the intact bedrooms of service members who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In 2009, a substantial part of the project was commissioned by The New York Times Magazine and published in March of 2010. Gilbertson meanwhile continues to concentrate on the two wars by examining veterans’ issues including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and War Motivated Suicide for Time Magazine and The Virginia Quarterly Review.
In addition to continuing as an assignment photographer, Gilbertson works on group projects with VII Photo, lectures frequently at galleries and universities globally and continues to travel internationally photographing stories.
