Palais Galliera : Vogue Paris 1920-2020

Preview

The Palais Galliera presents an unprecedented large-scale exhibition that celebrates 100 years of Vogue Paris magazine.

Founded by Condé Nast in 1920, Vogue Paris is today the oldest French fashion magazine still published, and the only title of the group to bear the name of a city and not that of a country. Capital of fashion, Paris is represented as the heart of cultural and artistic life and the Parisienne embodies the Vogue woman.

Mirror of its time, defender of creation, Vogue Paris is a major player in fashion, questioning the notions of taste, beauty and elegance. The exhibition bear witness to the capacity for creation, adaptation and anticipation which, for 100 years, characterized the magazine. Vogue Paris 1920-2020 traces the history of the magazine through the editors who have shaped it by their editorial and artistic choices, from Michel de Brunhoff to Emmanuelle Alt, including Edmonde Charles-Roux, Francine Crescent and Carine Roitfeld. Their personality, the length of their collaboration, their commitment, make the specificity and coherence of Vogue Paris.

The exhibition highlights the talent of the great illustrators and particularly the photographers that Vogue Paris has promoted: Hoyningen-Huene, Horst, Bourdin, Klein, Newton, Lindbergh, Testino, Inez & Vinoodh … have produced their most beautiful pages there.

Within the chronological journey, several focuses pay tribute to the magazine’s loyal accomplices. The exhibition evokes the exceptional collaborations with great couturiers, Yves Saint Laurent on the one hand and Karl Lagerfeld on the other hand, whom Vogue Paris has supported throughout their careers. The Vogue women are represented here by Catherine Deneuve and Kate Moss, who have had so many covers.

Vogue Paris 1920-2020 brings together nearly 400 works from the magazine’s archives – photographs, illustrations, magazines, documents, films – as well as some fifteen haute couture and ready-to-wear models.
