Palais Fesch – Museum of Fine Arts : Bae Bien-U : Forests, Spirits, and Men

Preview

The exhibition “Des forêts, des esprits et des hommes” by Bae Bien-U will be held at the Palais Fesch – Musée des Beaux-Arts in Ajaccio until February 1, 2026. It is presented as follows:

This exhibition presents the works of Bae Bien-U, one of the greatest South Korean photographers of his generation, across four major series: Alhambra, Venice, Sonamu, and Jeju.

Particular focus is given to his residency in Corsica, where the artist discovered landscapes that resonate deeply with those of his native country, Korea.

In the photos taken in Corsica, we find Bae Bien U’s unique perspective, deciphering nature as a body. If the echoes of the work produced in Venice facing the lagoon are striking, it is essentially through the capture of the abyssal effect of the sea. It does not appear in its transparency but as a heavy and opaque material. It is elsewhere that the world opens up with promises: in Corsica. The landscape is an amphitheater, a never-ending horizon. In the distance, elsewhere is declared: a summit that seems to levitate above waters, sometimes sparkling, sometimes of a disturbing density; a mountain range that opens and doubles, a plain that diffracts. Corsica is not a country that encloses but always a horizon pushed back. A world in itself. The artist encountered in Corsica a nature that appears, throughout the seasons, like a promise of infinity.
