Preview

The Eye of Photography dedicates a special edition to this renowned photography fair in New York, featuring a selection of exhibitions and single prints to buy this week with, for each of them, a word by their owners.

The38th edition of the annual photography fair organized by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), started on Wednesday and will be held until Sunday at Pier 94 in New York. The world’s leading fine art photography galleries present museum-quality work including contemporary, modern, and 19th-century photographs, as well as photo-based art, video, and new media. “We are excited to continue the extraordinary momentum from last year’s record breaking show,” said Richard Moore, President, AIPAD, and owner of Richard Moore Photographs. “Our debut at Pier 94 brought more galleries, increased attendance and rave reviews. We are working to make this year’s edition even more compelling, with more international exhibitors, special exhibitions, and new programs.”

For visitors – buyers and non-buyers –, three special exhibitions are on view during the four days of the event. Sir Elton John curated an exhibition on the theme of reflection and invited exhibiting AIPAD member galleries to submit work for an exhibition around the theme. Collector Joe Baio’s photographs will be the focus of an exhibition exploring childhood and adolescence, with work from Larry Fink, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Nan Goldin, Emmet Gowin, Ryan McGinley, and more, spanning from the history of the medium from the 19th century to the present. All Power: Visual Legacies of the Black Panther Party, curated by Michelle Dunn Marsh, shows a select group of contemporary black artists, from 22 to 70 years of age, who have been informed or influenced by the Panthers, including work by Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes, Kambui Olujimi, Lewis Watts, Carrie Mae Weems, or Hank Willis Thomas.

This year, the fair also offers an expanded program of talks and panel discussions featuring daily sessions with leading curators, critics, artists, gallerists, collectors, and journalists. This new program consists of 11 talks that explore some of the most challenging topics facing the world today from immigration, racism to climate change, gender equality and “fake news.” AIPAD Talks speakers include Susan Meiselas, Teju Cole, Sarah Meister, Tina Barney, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Edward Burtynsky, among others.
