This is a series of very touching images. They have just been published in OPENEYE magazine.
They are by Robert Degany and are accompanied by this text by Philippe Litzler.
A sad reflection
All the photos in this series were taken in 2023 in a small village of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. They are primarily presented as street photos, but they could just as well serve to illustrate a documentary news report on the challenges facing remote areas of France.
Entire regions are being abandoned by the elite. The growing absence of cutting-edge industries and investment resources is contributing to the decline of village life and the impoverishment of entire communities across the country.
The decline is further exacerbated by the consequent closure of essential services such as post offices, banks, food shops and even primary schools.
A vicious circle ensues, with qualified people increasingly joining the exodus from small towns and villages, leaving behind only the elderly and the economically inactive.
A sad reflection on our society!
