Goran Skofic: On the Beach, Immersed in the Image

Preview

A single plane, a sea, a sky, and a beach. And plenty of people going somewhere. Some looking for something, others waiting for something. Some are quiet, some are talking. Some are alone, some are together, and others are not there. Some can hear something, others say they can hear it. Some are not sure that they have seen such a spectacle, others think that things are happening differently. Some are looking for something better, while others stay in the gallery, watching them leave.

For his first solo exhibition in France, Croatian artist Goran Skofic is showing his work in two stages at Galerie Dix9 in Paris. To begin, the conceptual video On the Beach is projected. This experimental film is seen as an installation that plays with space; even the shadow of the protagonists are projected on the floor of the gallery while the viewer is immersed in the image. In a fixed sequence plane where three parts (the sky, the sea, and the beach) appear, fully clothed characters sink into the sea until they completely disappear. The character at the start reappears in the final scene, foiling the idea of a collective drowning. Knowing that the film was shot before the major Mediterranean migrations, its interpretation remains open to numerous understandings.
