Jayne H Baum – JHB Gallery presents a selection of photographs by Yuki Onodera.
“Yuki Onodera is a Japanese photographer who has lived in Paris since 1993. Her work explores the concepts of floating and weightlessness by means of technical and artistic experimentation.
In the series ‘Portraits of Second-Hand Clothes’, she photographed clothes she acquired during an exhibition by the artist Christian Boltanski, at which visitors could buy bags of second-hand clothing. She set these fabrics against a background of sky, making them resemble cloudy, disembodied portraits. For her project ‘P.N.I’ (standing for ‘portraits non identifiés’, or unidentified portraits), she collaged together eyes, noses and mouths from the faces of unknown people she found in magazines. Finding the structure in these soft-focus compositions demands a certain amount of effort on the part of the viewer.
Other projects have involved creating extremely large-format silkscreen prints, sometimes more than two metres in height; the manipulation of images via the use of collage and double exposures; the transformation of video clips into static images; and the staging of fictional scenes. Whatever she does, Onodera continues to push the boundaries of photography practice.”
