Nuits Photographiques : Elodie Marchand, Drôle de Pied

Preview

We continue and present the projects selected by Les Nuits Photographiques 2015 awards, which took place on September 19th. Today is about “Drôle de Pied“,  directed by Elodie Marchand, young french photographer.

Bodies with malformations unsettle our notion of normality. In a society where social standards tend to dominate, the body is the seat of our personal identity. Constantly identifying ourselves with others is what forms us.

This identification process is what pushes us to give to modern-day mechanical concepts such as prostheses a “human” appearance. It is one way of obscuring the disability.

When faced with differences, we rehabilitate, readapt and repair as a way of fleeing the “crippled” condition. This kind of material response alludes to our own fragility and the weakness of our own human body. Drôle de Pied depicts what comes after a domestic accident and does away with the image of a perfectly able body. It records one body’s fight as it seeks a new physical identity.
