Non-Photo Blue

Preview

The Galerie Temple opened six months ago on a little street in the Marais in Paris.   specialized in showing  the work of a new generation of artists, including Laurent Champoussin, Will Adler and Benoît Fougeirol. Now it’s Nicholas Gottlund’s turn, and he will be exhibiting his incredible photograms. The gallery focuses on contemporary photography, and this exhibition is no exception, playing as it does with the boundaries of the medium. With Non-Photo Blue, Nicholas uses colors taken from samples found in various glassware factories. The 16 unique prints play with the range of blue and the geometric forms that result from this fragile alloy.

For the exhibition Non–Photo Blue I have produced a series of photograms using samples of architectural glass from various manufacturers including the now defunct Southwest Glass Co., Blue Ridge Glass Co. and Mississippi Glass Co.,” says Gottlund. “The 16 unique prints reflect a narrow range of color within the blue spectrum which is also observable in the glass samples themselves.  However, this same blue would not be reproducible using traditional graphic arts cameras for commercial printing methods.  It is the non–printing, “photo blue”. The color in general could be described as “soft cyan“.

Nicholas Gottlund (b. 1981) is an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. His work explores the interaction between photography and printing. He is of the fifth generation of a family of printers. In 2007, he founded the publishing house Gottlund Verlag, which produce artist’s books in handmade limited editions. His work has been exhibited at Karma (New York), Open Space (Baltimore), Otras Obras (Tijuana) and FOAM Photography Museum (Amsterdam).
