The walls speak – palimpsests

When a people revolt, it starts from a situation of powerlessness, which would be the fundamental power, the sovereign power, comments Didi Huberman. From repression and the desire for change, individual forces unite in the multitude. In the Chilean case, historian Gabriel Salazar proposes that the popular revolt was the event that determined the openness to change on the part of Pinochet’s government; the popular class mobilized between 1983 and 1987, and beyond the dismissal of Pinochet, in some way called into question the problem of the “social system”. “What is at the basis of the days of protest is a certain sense of history as a collective construction based on a multiplicity of small, simultaneous, almost anonymous acts, which have a spatial dimension. This qualitatively changes the ways to do politics, by giving it a spatial, territorial dimension and a concrete character”, explains the historian.

This collective construction was experienced during what was called the social explosion of October 2019.
