“In Rooms is a complex meditation on the human psyche, sexuality, and the unconscious,” writes Richard McCabe, Curator of Photography at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
In Rooms began in the winter of 2011 as a visual diary, when visual artist Brittany Markert first picked up a 35mm camera and began using photography as a means of expression, escape, and the forming her inner worlds. What started as an intuitive method of survival has gradually evolved into an ongoing visual narrative, an abstract diary of the unconscious, primarily constructed through self-portraiture and staged interiors.
In her latest volume, In Rooms III, Markert continues her explorations into these psychologically charged dreamscapes. “This book is a testament of life, of choosing living,” she writes. “It is possible to live, to not fear death, to find stillness and clarity in every moment. The voices will pass, your thoughts do not define you. It is okay to be misunderstood.”
Rooted in analog photography and darkroom printing, In Rooms is shaped by slowness, ritual, and the uncertainty of photographic alchemy. The work draws from surrealism, occult symbolism, Jungian psychology, horror, cinema, and the emotional architecture of domestic spaces and relationship dynamics. Mirrors, veils, doorways, masks, and windows recur as symbolic thresholds between reality and the invisible. The body is a site of confrontation and transformation, moving over the years between seduction and sovereignty, collapse and resurrection, and silence and revelation.

Brittany Markert is also planning an upcoming exhibition, titled Domestic Interiors, currently slated for October 23 – November 2, 2026, in New Orleans. The exhibition will feature her original silver gelatin photographs, a selection of mask sculptures and doll animatronics by artist Sadie Shoaf, films by both Brittany and Sadie, giant puppets, and other new collaborative installations and sculptures.
On October 29th, Brittany will also curate a film screening and live music performance featuring her film Fragments, Charlie Jimenez‘s film Transmutation, and potentially a few other films, at The Marigny Opera House in New Orleans. The music is composed and directed by Jeff Pagano, featuring a string quartet ensemble of New Orleans based musicians.
