Speaking of Cindy Sherman, Abe Frajndlich sends us these images of her that he took and which are on display until November 26 at the Myers School of Art. He writes of the series:
I first met and photographed Cindy Sherman in Akron, Ohio on June 23rd, 1984.
Studying the images of herself as the subject, in various personae, before showing up for the shoot, the striking thing I realized was that she was essentially a shy person. As she herself said many years later, “I didn’t take photos to show myself, but to disappear.”
Trusting my instincts on this, I showed up with a couple of small masks in white and black, as a way for her to maintain her privacy in front of a total stranger. This opened the door to that first encounter, and we made the photographs in an unhurried manner in a couple of hours, just prior to her opening event for her first American retrospective at the Akron Art Museum in that Orwellian year, in both medium format and 35 mm.
