“From Soho With Love” is the title of Allan Tannenbaum‘s exhibition at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in Soho; it is presented as follows:
From Soho, With Love captures the vibrant spirit and cultural transformation of downtown New York City in the 1970s.
Through Tannenbaum’s lens, visitors are transported back to an era when the streets of SoHo were filled with artists, musicians, and a sense of creative possibility.
The exhibition features a wide range of photographs, from iconic portraits of John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Patti Smith to candid street scenes, artist lofts, gallery openings, and performance art — offering a rare and authentic glimpse into a neighborhood that has since drastically changed.
Tannenbaum’s first assignment for the SoHo Weekly News occurred nearly 52 years ago in December 1973.
As the newspaper’s chief photographer and photo editor until 1982, Tannenbaum documented a time when SoHo was a thriving hub for the arts, a far cry from the commercialized streets of today.
In addition to his photographs, the show will include original copies of the SoHo Weekly News, press cards, and newsstand materials, providing further historical context. Morrison Hotel Gallery, long a part of the SoHo community, is honored to celebrate Tannenbaum’s enduring legacy and his vivid chronicle of a downtown culture that shaped generations of artists and dreamers.
