Preview

A trip in photography? No doubt: Milan is the destination. from June 5th to 11th, the city is hosting a new initiative: it’s the first Milano PhotoWeek. A whole week and a program with more than 150 initiatives spread all over the town: special events every day, plus an interesting program of exhibitions, meetings, guided tours of museums and archives, workshops, editorial projects, openings and films.

Not to mention that, during the PhotoWeek, the Photo Festival (12th edition), which traditionally takes place in the spring involving the whole Metropolitan City is still on, with its more than 150 exhibit on display since April to June. Thanks to this synergy, Milan can be quite an interesting venue for “photographic tourism”, for those interested in learning more about photography.

The aim of Milano PhotoWeek, as it happens in other fields for the well-known FashionWeek and DesignWeek, is to promote photography in all its forms in order to bring people closer to it and to let them discover all the venues in Milan dealing with it ( museums, archives, galleries, laboratories, schools, photo agencies and photo collectives, publishing houses).

Milano PhotoWeek was set up also thanks to the cooperation of professionals working in this area, so much connected to photography as almost 25% of the business related to photography in Italy is concentrated in the town, as communicated by Milan Camera di Commercio data.

Among the many events, yesterday, on June 5th there was 365 + 1 Portraits in Milan project, conceived by Leica Camera Italia. Professional photographers shot 365 portraits of twosome living, working, studying or visiting Milan.

The evening at BASE Milano was dedicated to photo collectives from all over the world.

Today, on June 6th, Frigoriferi Milanesi is the venue for African photography with the exhibit The White Hunter (images by Seydou Keita, Malik Sidibé and Guy Tillim) and the documentary film Snapshots, in collaboration with the Lagos Photo Festival.

During the next days, other highlights are at the Stelline Foundation (a film clip of Robert Doisneau: Through the Lens documentary directed by Clémentine Deroudille, the presentations of next PhotoVougue festival in Milan and the launch of the 2nd edition of Master of Photography, the European show on Photography by Sky Arte HD). A film show dealing with well-known photographers will go on at CineWanted.

A meeting dealing with photography as a document or artistic expression by MiBACT per la Fotografia: Nuove strategie e nuovi sguardi sul territorio (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism: New strategies and new looks towards the future) is going to be held within the framework of  the Triennale . A guided tour of the exhibit La Terra Inquieta will also be organised.

From Friday to Sunday, Piazza Gae Aulenti is hosting the Wide Photo Fest 17, promoted by AIF – Italian Photo & Digital Association, together with leading brands, with events and contests, in order to know better new technologies in the photographic field. And, in collaboration with Muba – Milan Children’s Museum, there will be workshops for children.

Milano PhotoWeek and Milano ArchWeek, then, are going to be connected thanks to the Milan Open Portrait project, promoted by Fondazione Riccardo Catella as part of the project Porta Nuova Smart Community, with an installation combining photography and architecture. Fondazione Catella is also organizing a meeting on the role of photography in contemporary magazines.

Milano FotoWeek is promoted by the municipality di Milano, Culture Department, in collaboration with ArtsFor, Fondation Carmignac and Leica.
