Marc Garanger: Algerian Women

Preview

An admirer of Marc Garanger, the photographer Christian Rome, sent us these few images and this text. It is true that these portraits of Algerian women are of a great beauty.

“The recent disappearance of photographer Marc Garanger is an opportunity to review his very sensitive series of portraits of Algerian women. He did this work during his military service from 1960 to 1962 in Algeria. What is very surprising is that we are at the opposite of the prevailing racism of the time. He must have had a doubt about his photos because he waited fifty years to show them (around 2010). The square format in black and white finds all its justification here, it remains sober and empathetic… A great photographer… ” Christian Rome, May 4, 2020
