MAP Toulouse Festival : Jean-Claude Coutausse

“What use has a political photograph? None or a lot. It all depends on the sincerity of the artist. I haven’t talked about politics as a comedy since I realised that what I had in front of me were characters from a tragedy. Not the notables who are limited by their terms as deputies or their portfolios as ministers, but those few women and men who bring their lives and their names into play in order to set out to conquer the highest power that they have no fear in assuming it is theirs.

They never let go. Convinced of their own great destiny, they know how to make the winds blow in the meeting rooms. The crowds who carry them along celebrate them sometimes as if they were gods, others hate them to excess. Le Monde allows me to follow the great politicians, endlessly, at their closest, to capture their moments of euphoria, exhaustion or doubt which help set up their portraits and restore their status as human beings. This newspaper where the the strength of the verb is dominant has been responsible for the fragility of my pictures for the last dozen years.”
