La Térmica presents “Frida Kahlo. Photographs by Leo Matiz at La Casa Azul”. This exhibition includes the Leo Matiz’photographs of Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, known as Frida Kahlo (1907- 1954), married to Diego Rivera in 1929.
The exhibition, curated by Angustias Freijo and Mario Martín Pareja, shows not only the enigmatic artist Frida Kahlo in more than 50 images made by Leo Matiz which are property of the Leo Matiz Foundation, but also avant-garde magazines, books and artworks edited by fundamental authors and artists from that Mexican cultural scene period such as Germán Cueto, Mathías Goeritz, etc.
The photographs included in the “Frida Kahlo. Photographs by Leo Matiz at La Casa Azul” show are also an approach to one of the most important photographers of the 20th Century: Leo Matiz, who was exhibited by the MoMA Museum in 1949.
This exhibition wants to examine the vicarial use of the Photography by Kahlo, the role of those images in her creative work and how Frida defies 3 basic concepts of the Photography because of her portraits: the notion of authorship in her artwork, the way she uses the narrative possibilities of this medium and the relationship between these photographs and some autobiographical methods (“I am the motif I know the best”, she said). As Margaret Hooks said, her overwhelming personality is hidden under a mask in some photographs from this period, but her eyes are searching around the viewer with a gaze that has not lost a whit of her challenging pride or her appeal.
The show also incudes the emotional photographs of Frida’s Casa Azul shot by Leo Matiz when he came back to Mexico in 1997, after a 50-years absence. Matiz remembered that controversial woman who was his friend and who offered him the most special gazes which he inmortalized. Matiz also shot some of the objects which belonged to Frida as a way to find some traces of that woman who suffered and loved without lukewarmness.
