Inspired by the Filles de Chantelle female workers who carried out acts of resistance and solidarity from the 1970s to the 1990s – Benjamin Rullier explores the meaning of the word “struggle”. Whether personal or social, visible or hidden, solitary or shared, victorious or unfinished… Since November, the author and photographer, who is in residence at the Maison des arts in Saint-Herblain (44), has been meeting people for whom the struggle holds a special resonance. Until May 9th, he presents a gallery of faces and unique voices which together form a collective of struggles.
In an approach that blends documentary, sociology and storytelling, Benjamin Rullier brings faces and voices into dialogue around subjects rooted in everyday life. Out in the field, with his medium-format film camera and audio recorder, he prioritises taking his time and making connections. The portraits that emerge from these exchanges, just like the stories he gathers, become the raw material for collective narratives centred on human themes (grief in Scabieuses, struggle in Les poings, the daily lives of patients in Traverse).
