Lucien Clergue, Toros

Preview

Back then, being born in Arles usually meant you were born into l’aficion – bullfighting and its toros. All his life, Lucien Clergue would photograph the corridas from the ringside in Arles, Nîmes, Béziers, Seville and Madrid.

His talent shone through in one of his first ever works, which depicted the agony of the bull photographed at ground level from under the protective barrier. It showed that the bull remained the king of the arena after the fight and deserved the same celebrity as the torero.

He made his first film, Le Drame du taureau in 1965. It was awarded the Louis Lumière prize in 1966 and was followed by a number of other shorts.
