Le LieuZaide : Opening in Saint-Gaudens

Preview

Conceived as a space for the dissemination of and reflection on the image, LieuZaide is placed under the aegis of Jean Dieuzaide, founder of Toulouse’s Château d’Eau in 1974, a major figure in French photography whose commitment greatly contributed to the recognition of the photographic medium.

This initiative has long been maturing within the regional cultural landscape, and its earliest traces go back more than a decade. Left in a latent state in Toulouse the successive terms of Jean-Luc Moudenc, Pierre Cohen, and again Jean-Luc Moudenc never brought this officially approved project to fruition it is now taking shape in Saint-Gaudens, in an area unaccustomed to initiatives of such scope dedicated to photography. The name, almost self-evident, asserted itself to the point of being registered, a sign of the desire to firmly anchor this institution within the institutional landscape.

The Saint-Gaudens project originated in the meeting between Charles Mascagni, director of the Le Régent cinema and a central figure in local cultural life, and Michel Dieuzaide. Added to this initial impetus was the natural extension of the exhibition « L’Espagne des Dieuzaide », presented in 2023 at the Musée Arts & Figures des Pyrénées centrales.

Housed in the former premises of a printer, the building has been made available to accommodate part of Jean Dieuzaide’s studio archive. The municipality of Saint-Gaudens, aware of the heritage value represented by such an installation, actively supports the initiative by ensuring its operation.

Far from any commemorative temptation, the LieuZaide lays claim to an open program. Alongside the exhibitions devoted to Yan, other names will be added to the calendar. An orientation faithful to the spirit of the Gascon photographer, more a transmitter than a promoter of his own works, which still remain largely to be rediscovered.

Endowed with a rich collection of prints, archives, and publications, the venue intends to showcase more than sixty years of practice. The inaugural exhibition will notably present the large-format works from his studio on rue Érasme in Toulouse. As much an artisan of the image as a demanding technician, Dieuzaide had made the rare choice to master the entire production chain, from black-and-white to color and up to large prints, ensuring his own independence from Parisian laboratories.

Guided by a demanding artistic program, the LieuZaide thus aims to assert its place within the network of institutions devoted to photography. A vibrant space, destined to become a hub. A living all lovers of still images, as well as for local audiences.
