The exhibition Figures d’un Monde en Sursis by Matthias Koch is presented at La Ferme, Aubenas, from January 30 to March 13, 2026. The project is accompanied by a textual work developed with the philosopher Claude Molzino, not as commentary but as a space of resonance between image and thought.
Figures d’un Monde en Sursis is an exhibition that brings into dialogue the photographic gaze of Matthias Koch and the philosophical thinking of Claude Molzino. This joint project questions our era as a fragile time, a present lived under the threat—ecological, political, technological—of a possible irreversible rupture.
The photographs presented were selected and arranged by Claude Molzino, not as an illustration of concepts, but as a constellation of images capable of revealing, in and of themselves, the world’s contemporary state of reprieve. Ordinary spaces, transformed landscapes, seemingly unremarkable scenes: each image acts as a silent developer of the vulnerability of the living and of our collective responsibility.
Matthias Koch’s photographic work attends to thresholds: between presence and disappearance, between what endures and what threatens to fade away. Black and white, photography’s inherent temporal tension, and the attention given to absence lend the images a quality of watchfulness rather than mere observation.
Under Claude Molzino’s philosophical light, these photographs bring forth an “uncanny strangeness” that no longer refers only to memory or death, but to the radical uncertainty of our shared future. Far from any spectacular pessimism, the exhibition opens a space of awareness: a place where looking becomes an act of lucidity and, perhaps, a first form of commitment.
Matthias Koch (born in 1964) is a German photographer based in France (Ardèche). He develops long-term series in which the image works through memory, transmission, and the fissures of the present. His approach favors fragment, echo, and displacement over linear narrative.
