Samuel Beckett

“I hate to travel”, says the man with the soles of wind. Klavdij Sluban yet has travel in his genes. He carries with him the memory of peoples accustomed to be torn from their life, to leave everything, driven away by History’s whims or pressed by an inner necessity. For him, every departure is a wrench, yet he never stops exploring the world.

These 50 pictures were brought back from Turkey, Georgia, Abkhazia, Transnistria, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Gagauzia, Romania and Bulgaria. Black waters, the beauty of snow-covered cities, a swan shivering in the cold water, inevitably cold… Klavdij Sluban is an image poet, a plain poet. From the deep and textured blackness, delicate and subtle figures, faces and ghosts, emerge. The world is sometimes seen through a window with black paint strips flaking off. It is a moving world, stretched out, shivering, trembling, urgently seized by a stowaway hanging onto the train door. Boats are docked, rusting and falling apart. In a waiting room, a lonely man is sleeping, forgotten, holding his head. It is a silent universe, beating softly like a heart caught in ice, seized by the eyes of the poet.

These pictures belong to prestigious institutional collections; they were displayed at the Pompidou Centre and the Maison européenne de la photographie. They are presented in a gallery for the first time.

Klavdij Sluban is a photographer of Slovenian descent, born in Paris in 1963. Solitary and independent, he leads a full and consistent career. His work is structured around long cycles: Balkans-Transit, Around the Black Sea – Winter Journeys, Other Shores – The Baltic Sea, East to East, Happy Days at the Desolation Island, Tokyo Today, Paradise Lost, Centro-America – from one America to the other, Entre parentheses (In Brackets).
He received numerous prizes and awards, in particular: winner of the first artistic mission to the Kerguelen Islands in French Southern and Antarctic Lands, European Publishers Award for Photography in 2009, Leica Medal of Excellence in 2004, Niépce Award in 2000, Villa Médicis Hors-les-Murs Award in 1998 for the Black Sea project…
