Jackson Fine Art presents Vee Speers’ newest release The King’s Court, a series influenced from the extravagant courts of Versailles.
Known for drawing historical and cultural references throughout her career, this collection explores contemporary themes of identity, performance, and illusion that nods to the classical portraiture of the period. Like the courtiers who lived under the watchful eye of the King, her subjects are caught between self-expression and societal expectation.
Spoiled by adoration, Louis XV of Versailles developed into a bored and taciturn youth who required constant diversions to make the tediousness of ruling bearable. In the King’s court, festivities were organized with no specific theme, and were a ‘coordinated perambulation full of splendour and surprises’. Amongst them were the many courtesans, the ‘favourites’, the dancers and performers. I have invited dancers to collaborate, and using the flow and rhythm of movement I have created a poetic tapestry to establish a narrative with a nod to the flamboyant and opulent court of the King. — Vee Speers
