August 19 holds a special place in the history of our medium. On this date in 1839, the French government officially announced the invention of the daguerreotype, a breakthrough created by Louis Daguerre, declaring it a free gift to the world. Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre was a French artist, photographer, and inventor best known for creating the daguerreotype, the first widely adopted photographic process. In 1839, France released the daguerreotype “free to the world,” revolutionizing art, science, and portraiture. His legacy remains foundational in photography’s history.That landmark moment gave birth to World Photography Day, an annual global celebration of visual storytelling, light, and creative expression.
To honor this legacy, photographer and founder of Suspect Photography Education, David Brommer, is leading a guided photowalk through the historic winding streets of Cortona, Italy, and acclaimed author of Agreeable Strangers, Charles Chessler will be leading a similar photo walk in NYC’s Central Park.
Brommer’s Cortona, Italy Celebration Photo Walk
Our journey begins in the open surroundings of Piazza Garibaldi, offering panoramic views over the Valdichiana. From there, David will guide the group on a steady uphill walk through Cortona’s timeless stone alleyways, capturing the morning light, historic architecture, and subtle moments of Tuscan life along the way.
The walk culminates at the highest point in town, the historic Fortezza del Girifalco. Upon arrival, we will explore the featured exhibitions of Cortona On The Move, the world renowned festival dedicated to contemporary visual narrative. After touring the exhibitions, we will gather for lunch together at the bistro located inside the Fortezza grounds.
Whether you carry a mirrorless camera, a film camera, or a smartphone, this walk offers a chance to refine your visual eye, discuss composition with fellow enthusiasts, and mark World Photography Day in an extraordinary setting.
