Isabelle Chapuis –Barbapapa

Preview

The most beautiful works are those made with the least material.” Gustave Flaubert is probably turning in his grave. Since the beginning of her career, the French artist Isabelle Chapuis has worked with the same materials: cotton, fine fabrics, aqueous gels and gases. In her new series Barbapapa, on display at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, which awarded her its 2012 talent scholarship, Chapuis developed a passion for cotton candy. Her coldly beautiful models wear the confections as hats, jackets, belts and coats. Far from the childlike world associated with cotton candy, this series offers a contrast in colors and textures with a touch of humor, as when one of the child models lets his appetite get the best of him. These beautiful photographs reflect current trends in fashion photography, but they are more than just the flavor of the week.
