On the ground floor of the Maison de l’Image Documentary in Sète, the photographs of Jérôme Brézillon appear alongside the archives of Edward Curtis whose black-and-white photographs mirror Brézillon’s color photographs. The French photographer traveled several times across America , fascinated by its incredible diversity. On each trip he visited Indian reservations, in particular those of the Sioux Lakotas, in South Dakota, where he shot spare portraits and landscapes that paid tribute to the beauty of the place, but also man and the savage lands surrounding him, which have been coveted for many centuries. Brézillon’s work, Souverains, addresses a problem that is often overlooked in favor of stereotypes, and that is the sovereignty of the Native American peoples.
