American photographer Barbara Alper has released a new set of limited edition prints through the Getty Images Gallery. With a trained photojournalistic eye, Alper has been documenting significant cultural events on the streets and in more intimate surroundings for 40+ years. This selection of thirty-nine images from her archives, made in collaboration with Getty Images Gallery curator Shawn Waldron, features views of New York street characters and scenery, protest and Pride marches, erotic balls, beach-goers, and travel in both black & white and color. Tying them all together is the photographer’s strong humanistic sensibility and skill for capturing private moments in public settings.

Alper’s work can currently be seen in the exhibition Pride Marches On: Celebrating Fifty Years at the Art of Our Century gallery in New York and can also be found in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum; International Center of Photography, New York; FNAC and Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; the Polaroid International Collection; and Victoria & Albert Museum, London. She studied photography at the MIT Creative Photo lab and with renowned photographers Harold Feinstein and Lisette Model. True to form, she works instinctively and approaches every situation without preconceived notions or predetermined outcomes.
