Hendrik Hegray‘s second solo exhibition at Galerie Valeria Cetraro, FREESTyLE = CLAQUEMENTs DE CUISSE, appears at first glance as a place where the visitor can stay. In the center of the gallery, are two armchairs and a coffee table, on which are placed three files. These are collections of images that the artist has always collected, photocopied, cut out, assembled, and presented simply in notebooks, yet they take on all the value of what one could call the “imaginary of the artist.” On a wall is the installation that gives the title to the exhibition FREESTyLE = CLAQUEMENTs DE CUISSE (2011 – 2020), a wall composed of photographs taken by the artist with a Nokia mobile phone, between 2011 and 2012, period during which he was in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. On the other walls of the gallery and up to the office, there are more recent collages from the Egipan series (2019-2020). Hendrik Hegray’s fillm, Une saison en enfer (2020) is broadcast on a monitor.
Hendrik Hegray was born in 1981 in Limoges. He lives and works in Paris. His practice oscillates between the boundaries of art, exploring drawing, sculpture, publishing, photography, video and music. In 2014 Hendrik Hegray was nominated for the 16th Prix de la Fondation Ricard. Among the group exhibitions in which he recently participated: “A Study In Scarlet”, Le Plateau Frac Île-de-France, Paris, in 2018; “Futur, Ancien, Fugitif”, at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris in 2019; “Fin House” at Parc Saint-Leger, Pougues-les-eaux, in 2020.
