Galerie Sophie Scheideck presents the exhibition « Erwin Blumenfeld. L’art d’un précurseur ».
Erwin Blumenfeld (Berlin 1897 – Rome 1969) occupies a unique place in the history of 20th-century photography. From Europe to America, over the course of his wanderings, he was a self-taught artist engaged in wild artistic experimentation through the medium of photography.
A visionary artist, he constantly sought to explore the limits of images, to question the relationship between technique and perception, between reality and interpretation.
In the 1930s, working from his darkroom at the back of his leather-goods shop on the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam, he began to experiment with solarisation, superimposed negatives, inventive framing, and photomontage, drawing from the Dada movement of which he was a member.
