Galerie SIT DOWN : Géraldine Lay : Juste à côté

Preview

Galerie SIT DOWN presents the first solo exhibition by Géraldine Lay, Juste à côté (Real Close) is conceived as a sensitive journey through her entire body of work, bringing together a selection of her most iconic photographs.

Faithful to her approach as an attentive walker, guided by light and a patient curiosity for others, photographer Géraldine Lay presents in this exhibition a form of contemplation of the everyday. Juste à côté precisely refers to this way of looking beyond the usual flow of things, of slightly straying from the obvious to explore discreet, sensitive paths that escape the hurried gaze. Drawn to the margins, to what lies outside the main route, she captures these peripheral moments that we often neglect to notice.

Her work is rooted in a meticulous attention to the banal: a street corner, a fleeting gesture, the silent presence of an urban landscape. Through her lens, these seemingly ordinary fragments acquire a new depth, revealing a quiet beauty nestled in the world as it presents itself. She transforms the everyday into a sensitive territory, where the banal becomes material for storytelling, and where the real is imbued with an almost narrative aura. Juste à côté thus becomes a way of inhabiting the interstices: her images suggest the existence of an infinite number of secret scenes, ready to emerge once we accept to look obliquely, from a slight shift in perspective.

Géraldine Lay builds a visual grammar based on patient observation. Her images do not seek the extraordinary; instead, they delve into transitional spaces, the zones where colors, bodies, and places coexist in fragile harmony. The light, often soft and oblique, acts as a revealer of micro-events: it exposes the poetry of details, the unexpected presence of emotion in an otherwise mundane setting. The colored echoes speak of daily life with grace. Attentive to shadows and reflections, she captures fleeting moments and ordinary gestures that, through a shift in perspective, that seem to belong to a parallel world, between dream and reality.

The exhibition thus offers a journey where the gaze slows down and agrees to stray from the main path. Each photograph becomes a meeting place with what usually eludes us. In this sense, Géraldine Lay’s work is not just documentary: it is an art of presence, a practice of displacement, a way of moving through reality differently.

Juste à côté invites us to rediscover the silent beauty hidden in the very fabric of the world and to reevaluate the everyday as a space of poetry, nuance, and possibilities, an invitation to savor the discreet epiphanies that punctuate our days, just like breaths.
