Galerie Bigaignon presents their exhibition of-the-walls (at We Are) by Thomas Paquet entitled “Dreaming like a dreamer” from September 3 to October 31.
French-Canadian artist born in 1979, Thomas Paquet questions the nature of time, the structure of its uninterrupted flow and the dynamics of its movement. For several years, in a play of construction to paint a sensitive experience of the world, Thomas Paquet has been undertaking a photographic study around its fundamental characteristics: light, space and time. His approach to photography is direct, practical. Experimentation is often central to his research and a device, whether optical, physical or chemical, is developed for each of his projects. The works thus produced, between premeditation and chance, has an experimental dimension that works from within the possibilities and limits of the photographic document.
Thomas thwarts speed, as well as the standardization of images and the standardization of their production. He considers photography as an art form whose manner cannot be ignored. Thus, analog processes are often at the heart of his creative process. Thomas uses wet collodion prints, gelatin-bromide prints and cyanotypes. Day after day, renewed through the eyes, his gestures are prolonged on the photographic emulsion. His approach is one of a craftsman, he works the matter. The use of traditional processes also allows him to question our relationship to the passage of time. By blurring the boundaries between materiality and abstraction, objectivity and subjectivity, his works are a poetic invitation to go beyond our representation of reality. The resulting printed image lures our own beliefs and operate a passage from the immaterial towards a tangible and physical reality.
