FotoFest 2014: Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige

Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige are Lebanese filmmakers and artists whose cinematic and visual art practices intertwine. Their films and installations emerge from a common concern with image making and storytelling. Together, they have directed the documentaries The Lebanese Rocket Society (2012), Khiam 2000-2007 (2008), and El Film el Mafkoud [The Lost Film] (2003), and feature films including Al Bayt el Zaher [The Pink House] (1999) and A Perfect Day (2005). Their last feature film, Je Veux Voir [I Want to See], starring Catherine Deneuve and Rabih Mroué, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 in the “Un Certain Regard” section; it received the Best Singular Film Award from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics that year. 

Hadjithomas and Joreige have created numerous photographic and video installations. Their artwork has been shown in many museums, bienniales, and art centers around the world, including the solo exhibitions/screenings Je Veux Voir (2012), Gasworks, Triangle Arts Trust, London, 2010; Wonder Beirut (2009), Centre de la photography – Genève, Switzerland; We Could be Heroes Just for One Day (2008), Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Circulo de confusion (2008), Musée de Gigon, Spain; Back to the Present (2008) at Home Works IV: A Forum on Cultural Practices, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut; and The Lebanese Rocket Society: Parts III, IV, V (2012), The Third Line, Dubai, U.A.E. Moreover, they were included in prominent group exhibitions in venues such as Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, Paris; La Triennale 2012: Intense Proximity, Palais de Tokyo, Paris; 11th Biennale de Lyon (2011); Sharjah Biennial 10 (2011), U.A.E.; and Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane Australia In October 2011, they were announced as one of the winners of the prestigious Abraaj Group Art Prize, Dubai. 

Their work is part of important public and private collections, such as those of the Musée National d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Sharjah Art Foundation, U.A.E.; Centre national des artes plastique, Paris-La Défense; Barjeel Art Foundation, Sarjah, U.A.E.; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
